As the owner of two San Francisco businesses, Floorcraft Carpet One Floor & Home and Flowercraft Garden Center, longtime proprietor Jeff Lerner is all too aware of the everyday struggles waged by small businesses in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
While the pandemic has dramatically impacted the way Jeff and his staff conduct business these days, he knows many of his neighbors have it much, much worse. “We’ve seen so much upheaval of so many normal daily functions that we go through,” he explained. “But the most vulnerable in our community are affected more than ever.”
After hearing a local news segment about the challenges being waged by the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank, which serves some of the region’s most disadvantaged populations, Jeff immediately reached out to see how he could help. “I thought that Floorcraft and Flowercraft, with our sales and revenue, we might be able to commit to assisting them in some part during these times of need,” he added. Conducting a thorough analysis of his business budgets, Jeff determined that his companies could sponsor the food bank on a monthly basis.
In March, the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank was declared an essential service provider by the state Department of Public Health and since that time, the organization has been paddling upstream to provide for the growing number of people coping with limited food access due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The charity’s outreach has reportedly spanned tenfold, and staff have been racing against time to meet rapidly increasing calls for assistance: area senior citizens, the homeless, and those who have recently lost jobs, among others.
Spreading the word via posters in his stores, as well as on social media, Jeff has also called on his customers to likewise consider donating to the local food bank now and in the months to follow. He certainly hasn’t acted alone. “Everyone has done such a fantastic job wading through these challenging times,” Jeff emphasized. “We should all be proud to support each other and support our community.”
