On January 16, 2012, Retired GySgt Tom McRae, at the age of 29, had served three tours of duty in Iraq, and was on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan, when he was catastrophically injured by an improvised explosive device that was detonated underneath him. This explosion resulted in the amputation of both of his legs and his left arm, injuries to his brain, and the loss of sight in his right eye.
On April 7th, 2016, after four years of recovery, GySgt Tom McRae finally has somewhere to call home with his daughter Aidan in Maple Hill, NC. This was made possible by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation's Building for America's Bravest program, and many generous donors including Carpet One Floor & Home of Wilmington who donated all of the flooring installation in the home. Below are some pictures of the smart home that is custom built with high tech features that will allow GySgt McRae the ability to care for his daughter and to make many happy new memories together.
