Do you like to entertain, host family dinners or just dine in style? Your dining room is one of the rooms your guest will spend the most time in. And you want it to look amazing. We recently had the opportunity to ask designers Glen Peloso and Jamie Alexander for the inside scoop on their beautiful and creative dining room. Take their advice and use this dining room inspiration to create a beautiful room of your own.
BDMS: What was your inspiration for this room?
G&J: The dining table set the tone for this room. Whenever you start to design a room, select the largest element first, which is the anchor of the space and provides you with a functional space if that is the only element you have.
BDMS: The light figures in this room are very unique. Why did you choose them over a more traditional dining room lighting fixture?
G&J: We loved the organic detail of the fixture and it fit in well with the idea of “style spots” for this trade show. We also really like the fact that the fixture was open enough to make it feel airy. It also allowed for the element of the Edison bulbs which create a beautiful warm glow to the space.
BDMS: Why did you choose to add a bench to the seating arrangement?
G&J: The bench seating provides the room with both function and a more casual feel than do the traditional dining seating we are accustomed to. With the proliferation of open concept kitchens the more casual dining area is ever more popular. The bench makes the space seem more causal.
BDMS: Why is this rug great for this space? Do you have any rules for rugs in dining rooms? What type of flooring would you include under this rug if it were in a home?
G&J: Rugs should be approximately 36 inches smaller than the dimensions of the room. If the room is particularly large than you want to be sure that you select a carpet that is 30 inches larger than the table top. This allows for all the chairs to be on the carpet when they are pulled out from the table during a diner.
In a residential application we would still like to see a hard wood under the carpet to rim the room. You ideally have approximately 15 inches of hard wood exposed around the carpet edge, depending on the dimension of the table.
