So, what is Japandi style? Japandi is an up-and-coming style that combines both Japanese and Scandinavian styles to create a unique look. The clean lines of Scandinavian style along with the importance of natural materials combined with an emphasis of functionality and comfort from the Japanese style creates this interior design look that is exploding in homes everywhere.
First, start with natural or handmade materials like wood, bamboo, leather, concrete, or rattan. This style focuses on sustainability and natural elements, so it’s crucial that the flooring, furniture and décor you choose is made of these materials if you want to achieve the Japandi style.
Keep a focus on neutral colors like beige, tan, black, and shades of white. While these colors may seem simple, you will be able to make them bold and bright by choosing a variety of materials and textures to bring your design to life. A simple pop of earth green or black will contrast beautifully against any of your other neutrals.
Pick some greenery. Whether you choose a live plant or a fake one, greenery in a mostly neutral space will liven it up and add interest. Remember, functionality is key in this design, so choose a plant and a pot that fits the space well.
Reduce clutter. Where possible, clean up your space by giving every item a specific place where it belongs. This will not only help keep your home clean, but it will add to the elegance of the Japandi design.
Take a step back. Look around. Is there anything you can remove that you don’t find necessary? Japandi style is all about making a space feel functional, warm, and clean. Is there anything you can find that will help you truly achieve this goal? Take it out and see if you miss it, or if the white space feels welcome.
Continue to evaluate. Because the Japandi style is all about functionality and warmth, it’s a good idea to determine what is working well and what isn’t fulfilling you and your space, especially over time as your needs change. Get rid of what doesn’t work and add or replace where you feel you need to. Err on the side of simplicity when you’re torn.
